Matter
Matter- the stuff of which the universe is composed of; it has mass and occupies space
3 States of Matter
Properties Physical Properties Two types of physical properties
ex: mass, volume, length, and dimension Chemical Properties the ability to form new substances under a given condition Physical and Chemical Change
all matter can change chemically or physically
*matter cannot be created or destroyed |
atoms- the smallest basic unit of matter
element- a pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom distinguished by its atomic number which is the number of protons in the nucleus protons- positive charge neutrons- no charge electrons- negative charge compound- substance made of atoms of different elements bonded together in a certain ratio
most matter is a mixture of substances mixture- defined a material that has a variable composition and is not chemically bonded pure substances- materials that will always have the same composition
Types of Mixtures Homogenous mixture- the same proportion throughout the material Heterogenous mixture- contains regions of different proportion Separation of Mixtures
boiling point- the temperature at which a liquid will boil and evaporate |
